What is the best city/urban development to live in California?

Me and my husband are trying to move there by the end of the year. Place we're looking for should be quite urban. By that I mean no need to drive for 20-30 minutes to the nearest supermarket. Ideally we'd like to use the car as less as possible. That said our ideal corner would be pretty, pedestrian-friendly, with public transportation available, with lots of places to go out and wouldn't cost a pretty penny. Let me know if such a paradise exists.

1. Sierra Madre, CA is located just east of Pasadena. Population is only about 10,000 but light rail or bus takes you into Pasadena and L.A. in a few minutes. Just voted nicest little town in America (one of ten). Come and check it out!
